Revision Breast Reconstruction
Have Previous Reconstructive Surgeries Left You Less Than Satisfied?
Reconstruction of the breast post-mastectomy (for both benign and malignant diseases) has become commonplace over the past several decades. Though frequently done at the time of the mastectomy (immediate reconstruction), there are times where this needs to be done in a delayed fashion. In either case, revisional procedures are often warranted to improve the overall outcome of your initial procedure.
How Does Revision Breast Reconstruction Work?
Revisional procedures are usually done after the completion of any oncologic treatments required for patients with breast cancer. Many revisional procedures are simple, consisting of a size or shape adjustment. Additionally, nipple reconstruction may be required if the nipple was removed at the time of the mastectomy.
Other revisional procedures are much more difficult requiring implant exchanges, fat transfer, or even flap salvage reconstruction. The surgeons at Longwood Plastic Surgery have gained over 40 years’ combined experience in this area. Each week at LPS patients undergo complex revisional breast reconstruction in an attempt to bring patients towards their ultimate goals.
Am I a Good Candidate for Revision Breast Reconstruction?
You may be a good candidate for revision breast reconstruction if you’re unhappy with the way your breasts look post-mastectomy. Revision procedures can be done as early as 3-months after your initial procedure and typically have a high success rate. If you’re having trouble coping with losing a vital part of your physical anatomy and would like to restore a more contoured shape, revision reconstruction might be right for you.
The ideal patient for revision breast reconstruction is an otherwise healthy adult both physically and emotionally. Patients should have realistic expectations about their procedure including projected scarring, recovery, and results.
