Revision Breast Reconstruction

Have Previous Reconstructive Surgeries Left You Less Than Satisfied?

Reconstruction of the breast post-mastectomy (for both benign and malignant diseases) has become commonplace over the past several decades. Though frequently done at the time of the mastectomy (immediate reconstruction), there are times where this needs to be done in a delayed fashion. In either case, revisional procedures are often warranted to improve the overall outcome of your initial procedure.

How Does Revision Breast Reconstruction Work?

Revisional procedures are usually done after the completion of any oncologic treatments required for patients with breast cancer. Many revisional procedures are simple, consisting of a size or shape adjustment. Additionally, nipple reconstruction may be required if the nipple was removed at the time of the mastectomy.
Other revisional procedures are much more difficult requiring implant exchanges, fat transfer, or even flap salvage reconstruction. The surgeons at Longwood Plastic Surgery have gained over 40 years’ combined experience in this area. Each week at LPS patients undergo complex revisional breast reconstruction in an attempt to bring patients towards their ultimate goals.

Am I a Good Candidate for Revision Breast Reconstruction?

You may be a good candidate for revision breast reconstruction if you’re unhappy with the way your breasts look post-mastectomy. Revision procedures can be done as early as 3-months after your initial procedure and typically have a high success rate. If you’re having trouble coping with losing a vital part of your physical anatomy and would like to restore a more contoured shape, revision reconstruction might be right for you.
The ideal patient for revision breast reconstruction is an otherwise healthy adult both physically and emotionally. Patients should have realistic expectations about their procedure including projected scarring, recovery, and results.

FAQ’s

Immediately following your revision surgery, you’ll be able to see an improvement to the overall look and feel of your breasts. Although some post-operative swelling can occur, you’ll likely be happy with the results right away. An optimal outcome will be noticeable in about 2-3 weeks with gradual improvement over the course of 6-12 months as your new breasts fully “settle”.

You can expect your revision surgery to have a similar recovery to that of your initial surgery. Your procedure will be done on an outpatient basis, and you’ll be able to head home the same day. Initial discomfort will typically be at its worst for several days during which ice packs and prescription pain medication can be used.

Most patients are able to return to (non-strenuous) work within 1-2 weeks. Social downtime and more strenuous activities can be incorporated into your daily routine as you feel more comfortable. Full recovery from revision reconstructive surgeries can take upwards of six months or more. Your LPS surgeon will customize a post-surgical plan to minimize scarring and facilitate a smooth recovery.
