Fat Transfer

A Natural Solution with Lasting Results

If you’ve ever wanted a modest, natural way of volumizing your problem areas, fat transfer (or “fat grafting”) could be the treatment for you. Using naturally-occurring fat that occurs in other areas of your body, our team at Longwood Plastic Surgery can improve volume on certain areas of the face or breasts. Unlike artificial fillers, fat transfer produces results that can be life long.

How Does A Fat Transfer Work?

Using naturally-occurring fat cells that occur on larger areas of the body, surgeons can extract and relocate fat tissue to those problem areas that need a little work. Fat cells are extracted via liposuction from an area that is of concern to you. Typical areas include the buttocks, outer thigh or the abdomen. After the existing fat is extracted, it is then prepared for transfer in a manner that minimizes cell damage and allows for successful fat graft take.  After this is achieved, your specialist is able to relocate it via a cannula (a thin, hollow tube) to the desired area and help you achieve your aesthetic goals.

Am I a Good Candidate for Fat Transfer?

An ideal candidate should be in good health and looking to add volume to the face or breast. Typical candidates are looking to achieve one or several of the following goals:

FAQ’s

Patients can expect liposuction from donor areas to be quick but will take longer if the targeted area requires more volume (breast enhancements will take longer than facial ones). Depending on your aesthetic goals and the intensity of the treatment, the grafting process can take anywhere from 30 minutes to over an hour. Local anesthetics can be used, and more intensive procedures may require a general anesthetic. For an estimated treatment time tailored to your goals, consult your service provider.

Depending on the patient’s goals, results are tailored to each individual by their surgeon. General results include restored contours and added volume to the face and/or breasts with most reporting feeling younger and more confident in their appearance. As mentioned before, results are long-lasting as our body is able to keep the existing fat cells alive and retain them naturally.

Depending on the intensity and volume transferred during the treatment, patients should expect downtime to last from 1-4 weeks with those undergoing breast enhancement taking longer to recover. Facial transfer patients should expect to take a week off from social functions. Targeted results are achieved after 4-6 months. Consult your provider for appropriate preparation and aftercare procedures.
