Botox® for Jaw Slimming & TMJ Relief: Aesthetic and Functional Benefits

While Botox® is widely known for its wrinkle-smoothing capabilities, its benefits extend far beyond cosmetic enhancements. Botox® can also slim the jawline and help relieve the pain and tension associated with TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorders.

At Longwood Plastic Surgery, we offer this versatile treatment to address both aesthetic concerns and functional discomfort.

What is Botox®, and How Does it Work?

Botox® is a purified form of botulinum toxin type A, a neuromodulator that temporarily relaxes targeted muscles. By interrupting nerve signals, Botox® reduces muscle movement, which softens the appearance of dynamic wrinkles like crow’s feet and frown lines.

However, its muscle-relaxing properties also make it a highly effective treatment for non-cosmetic concerns. When injected into overactive or enlarged muscles, like the masseter muscle, which runs along the jaw, Botox® weakens the muscle activity that contributes to:

  • jaw clenching
  • teeth grinding (bruxism)
  • TMJ pain.

Over time, it can also reduce the size of the masseter muscle, creating a slimmer, more contoured jawline.

Botox® for Jaw Slimming & TMJ Relief: Aesthetic and Functional Benefits

Jaw Slimming:
In individuals with strong or enlarged masseter muscles, the lower face can appear wider or more square-shaped. Botox® injections into the masseter allow the muscle to gradually shrink due to reduced activity.

This results in a slimmer, more V-shaped lower face, a subtle but noticeable facial contouring effect without surgery or downtime.

TMJ Symptom Relief:
TMJ disorders can cause symptoms such as jaw pain, tension headaches, earaches, facial soreness, and difficulty chewing. Botox® can provide relief by relaxing the jaw muscles responsible for these symptoms.

Many people experience a reduction in pain, fewer headaches, and an improved range of motion in the jaw following treatment.

Bruxism Control:
If you grind or clench your teeth during the day or while sleeping, Botox® can help ease the force of those movements. Reducing this pressure not only minimizes jaw discomfort but may also protect your teeth from long-term damage like fractures and enamel wear.

Dual Benefits:
One of the most appealing aspects of Botox® in this area is that it offers aesthetic and therapeutic benefits in one simple treatment.

Many of our patients at Longwood Plastic Surgery choose Botox® for jaw slimming and discover that their chronic TMJ symptoms improve significantly, making it a functional and cosmetic win.

How Often Should You Get Botox®?

Results from Botox® for jaw slimming or TMJ relief typically last between 3 to 5 months, depending on how your body metabolizes the product and how active your jaw muscles are.

For jaw slimming, it may take several sessions to fully reduce muscle bulk and achieve your ideal contour. Once optimal results are reached, you will establish your own maintenance schedule based on your response to treatment.

For TMJ relief, symptom reduction often begins within a few days to two weeks of treatment, with continued improvement over the next several weeks. Regular sessions can help maintain your results and reduce the severity of your symptoms long-term.

Can You Go Back to Work After Getting Botox®?

Yes, Botox® is a quick, in-office treatment with no required downtime. Most people return to work or normal daily activities immediately after their appointment. You may experience minor redness or swelling at the injection sites, but these effects typically fade within a few hours.

While the treatment itself takes just a few minutes, it’s important to avoid lying down, exercising, or rubbing the treated area for at least 4 hours post-injection to ensure optimal results.

Am I a Good Candidate for Botox® for Jaw Slimming or TMJ Relief?

You may be a good candidate if you:

  • Have a wide or square jaw caused by enlarged masseter muscles
  • Experience jaw pain, clicking, or popping due to TMJ dysfunction
  • Suffer from frequent tension headaches or teeth grinding
  • Want a non-surgical solution for facial slimming or TMJ symptom relief
  • Are in good general health with realistic expectations

During your consultation at Longwood Plastic Surgery, we’ll evaluate your facial structure, symptoms, and treatment goals to determine if Botox® is the right solution for you. In some cases, we may recommend additional treatments.

After meeting with many doctors and doing my research across the Boston area I immediately felt comfortable with this group. Had the best experience and results with Dr. Vieira and her team. Kind, wonderful nursing staff, clean and modern facility, and fantastic results and care with Dr. Vieira! Highly recommend LPS!
